You made promises even last time but what happened to fulfilling them?
It is famously said by Abraham Lincoln that the meaning of democracy is ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people’. At least that’s what we were taught in school, right?
But I think this phrase has lost all meaning. It is now merely an answer to the question ‘Define Democracy’ in an examination. That’s all the meaning it holds anymore!
Since the time of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru till the era of Mr. Narendra Modi, the Indian government has evolved. But has it evolved for good?
We sit hopefully with little black marks on our forefinger indicating that we’ve done our part.
Before every election we hear the same speeches, the same old stories – water and electricity for the suburban areas and upliftment of the metropolitan. Before every election we sit hopefully listening to the rallies and patriotic songs blaring on speakers in processions. We sit hopefully that this time at least one of you holds true to your promises. We sit hopefully with little black marks on our forefinger indicating that we’ve done our part.
We are still as hopeful as we were when we initially obtained the right to vote.
But how many have come and gone (with heavier pockets than they started out with) and how many have done their rightful duty?
And yet we’ve heard the same speeches in this election. We have the same kind of mark on our fingers. And we are still as hopeful as we were when we initially obtained the right to vote.
In closing I just have one question for you; we have done our part in this election, when will you?
A proud (?) citizen of the country!
