She had been a little off for the last couple of days. But it’s not like he hadn’t noticed.
She slept late and woke up even later. Her dark circles and eye bags were more apparent than ever. She barely ate and her clothes hung on her as if they were hung on a hanger.
It had been going on for way too long. He couldn’t take it anymore. He had to talk to her today.
This evening, he went and gently knocked on her door. A few knocks later, a soft voice asked him to come in.
He walked inside and saw that the room was messier than before what with all the scattered clothes and untouched trays full of food.
He could not have felt worse.
He walked over to her bed as she sat upright and gave him a little space to be seated.
Even after he had uncomfortably sat down, he didn’t speak for minutes. She didn’t either!
He – Isn’t it tough?
She – What?
He – To decide what you want your life to be about?
She looked at him with eyes full of surprise and tears. Promptly, she looked away and answered in an even softer tone, almost a whisper.
She – I think it’s even harder to decide what you’re willing to give up, to have the kind of life you want.
He sighed and pulled her in for a hug. And that was her breaking point. She hugged him tighter as tears steadily rolled down her cheeks.
He – I’ll be fine, silly. Don’t worry! Accept that application from the university you’ve always dreamed of! So what if it’s a few continents away? This old father of yours will come to visit.
